About Moonlight

A selection of Moonlight-glazed pieces are available at Side Street Studio, Oak Bay Avenue, Victoria, BC.

I didn’t think I’d go down the white pottery path, but something happened to me in the depths of glaze formulation testing.

For a long while I had my hopes set on cooking up a glaze that had very specific traits.  I wanted it to be matte (but not a stoney matte), play nicely with slip decoration, and have a subtle character – not just a flat look.  It also had to fit my favourite stoneware clay and perform under a specific firing schedule in the kiln.  Too much to ask for someone new to glaze chemistry?  Maybe.  But what’s the point if you can’t torture yourself in hopes of realizing your dreams?  In my two-year search for this glaze, one morning I pulled some test tiles out of the kiln and was displeased (again)… except for that one little test tile in the back.  The one I’d not added any carbonates to.  The obligatory test tile that we glaze-makers do to see what the subtle hue of a glaze is without colourants.  I pulled it out and thought it looked pretty nice.. a gentle white from the titanium crystals that had formed, and certainly not toilet-bowl-white.  The next thing to do after pulling out a test tile is to take it into the nearest beam of sunlight.  I noticed something very exciting!  I slowly moved the test tile side to side in the light and wouldn’t you know it, it had an interesting, reflective glimmer!

After doing some refining of specific gravity and application (it’s a tricky one), along with durability testing, the Moonlight line was born.  Paired together with my Tin White glossy glaze, this line is now featured at Side Street Studio on Oak Bay Avenue in Victoria, BC.
